Every year since 2005, Archangel has organized and hosted a multi-day Forum dedicated to the maritime heritage of the Archangel Region. The purpose of the Forum is to promote the civilian and naval maritime opportunities that are available to young people in Russia. Participants include regional and city officials, maritime companies, Russian Navy officials, educational
institutions, museums, students and veterans organizations.
This year, the Forum will focus on the World War II Arctic Convoys as Archangel commemorates the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the first allied Arctic Convoy DERVISH into the port of
Archangel on August 31, 1941.
At Archangel';s request, Westbrook Mayor Michael Foley, on behalf of Greater Portland and our Archangel Committee, has recorded a brief video to the Forum participants. Mayor Foley noted the history of the Liberty Ships, the efforts made to preserve the memory of cooperation between our nations and offered greetings and best wishes for the future. The video has been
sent to Archangel and will be played at the Forum.
